Send a Smile Exhibition

29th February - 30th March

Free
Yellow background with the outline image of a house with various postcards with the image of flags from across the world are shown inside.

In 2020, during COVID isolation, members of the theatre company Underground Lights in Coventry sent messages and pictures to help cheer each other up and make them smile.  Arts & Homelessness Int encouraged other arts and homelessness groups from around the world to take part.

The result is a collection of over 250 ‘Send a Smile’ postcards from Cocoroom (Japan), P:ear Mentor (USA), Milk Crate Theatre (Australia), Johannesburg Awakening Minds (South Africa), Pehchan (India) and Uma Só Voz (Brazil) – all illustrating the power of creativity and connection during difficult times.

The postcards are now touring around England in 2024 as an installation created by David Tovey and Dan Badja and will be at Rochester Library from Thursday, 29 February to Wednesday, 13 March before moving on to Manchester Museum for 18 March.

The exhibition is free and interactive – the public is invited to create more postcards for the exhibition (or to ‘send a smile’ to other people they know) and to think about what action they can take to support people who are homeless.
